In the final days before the caucus, some evangelical supporters of Mr. Huckabee are making sure the state’s pastors and evangelicals do not forget these concerns. “Romney struggles to attract those who could not support a Mormon,” Rick Scarborough, the founder of the Christian conservative group Vision America, wrote in a mass e-mailing earlier this week. “Yet, many others who could support a Mormon struggle with Romney because he is not a good (or at least consistent) Mormon,” he added, alluding to Mr. Romney’s changed view on abortion. (The Mormon church opposes most abortion rights on the basis of support for traditional families, but it does not share the same Catholic or evangelical Protestant ideas about the conception as the beginning of spiritual life.)
