Join Hundreds of Thousands of Others in an Effort to Stop the Hate Crimes Bill

During the past few weeks a good friend of mine, Janet Folger-Porter, who also heads the Faith2Action Ministry, spear-headed a national campaign to have thousands of letters sent to Senators by FedEx overnight. The idea originated during one of our weekly S.T.O.P. Obama nationwide strategy calls.
For only $10.95 any American can sign and address a letter to every Senator, expressing opposition to the pending hate crimes legislation, also known as the "Pedophile Protection Act" due to its inclusion of pedophiles as a protected class under the proposal that protects homosexuals from hate crimes.
As of May 18, approximately 4,500 people had participated, sending a total of 450,000 letters to Senators. Each letter asks for opposition to the bill and a filibuster if necessary. They also have individual signatures and return addresses with a request for a written response.
The body of the letter reads as follows:
"I am writing to urge you to do all in your power to oppose passage of S.909, also known as 'The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.'
"Passage of this bill by the U.S. Senate would be reckless and irresponsible not only because of the 'chilling effect' it would have on First Amendment-guaranteed rights to free speech, but also because it would provide, for the first time ever, special legal protections for pedophiles and other sexual offenders.
"This bill would more appropriately be called 'The Pedophile Protection Act.'
"The evidence for this extraordinary statement comes directly from debate in the House, when a simple amendment to exempt pedophiles from the protections offered by the bill were rejected.
"I write to warn you that those who support it, or allow it to become the law of the land without a fight, will be held accountable at election time.
"If there was ever a time for the Senate to stand and fight with a filibuster, that time is now. We are calling for members of the Senate, Republicans and Democrats alike, to stop S. 909.
"Stop 'The Pedophile Protection Act' dead in its tracks - now.
"Please respond to me in writing as to whether you intend to oppose this dangerous bill - including by filibuster if necessary."
A hearing on S. 909, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, is expected soon in the Senate Judiciary Committee. It has already been approved in the U.S. House as H.R. 1913.
President Obama appears ready to stand in defense of homosexuals: "I urge members on both sides of the aisle to act on this important civil rights issue by passing this legislation to protect all of our citizens from violent acts of intolerance."
