Join Me In Praying For Our Nation!

Tomorrow is the 58th Annual National Day of Prayer. Millions will unite in prayer of Americans will gather to pray at tens of thousands of events that will be taking place from coast to coast. I will be participating in the National Observance in Washington, D.C., and I hope you’ll join me in praying for our nation -- and thanking God for the blessings He’s bestowed on us.

The theme for this year is "Prayer... America's Hope" and is based on the verse from Psalm 33:22 which states: "May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you." Unfortunately for our nation, our current President apparently doesn’t agree. In his press conference on April 6 in Turkey, President Barack Obama stated, "One of the great strengths of the United States is... we have a very large Christian population -- we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values."

So perhaps it’s not surprising that President Obama has now cancelled the annual public observance of the National Day of Prayer! For the last eight years, prominent evangelical and other spiritual leaders were invited to attend an event in the East Room of the White House. But this year, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs announced the Obama administration plans to recognize the National Day of Prayer on Thursday with a paper proclamation, rather than a public event at the White House.

Well, since our President has declared that we no longer consider ourselves a Christian nation, Congressman Randy Forbes will introduce "America's Spiritual Heritage Resolution" (H. Res. 397) at a press conference tomorrow on Capitol Hill to reaffirm America's rich Judeo-Christian heritage. I will be joining in the press conference along with other Congressmen from the Congressional Prayer Caucus and many leaders of faith-based groups as we all support this effort to reaffirm America's rich spiritual traditions.

The history of this nation is replete with presidents beseeching the blessings of God upon this nation. All of the proclamations have acknowledged the God of the Bible as provident over the affairs of man and country. In 1963, John F. Kennedy stated, "Our forefathers declared the independence of our Nation 'with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence.' In that reliance, they set forth the conviction that all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." In 1995, President Bill Clinton declared, "The Congress, by Public Law 100-307, has called on our citizens to reaffirm annually our dependence on Almighty God by recognizing a 'National Day of Prayer.'"

I look forward to reading President Obama's proclamation... especially considering his recent comments.

I encourage you to contact your U. S. Congressman and urge them to co-sponsor H. Res 397, "America's Spiritual Heritage Resolution," today. And please, pray for our nation... now, more than ever!

I remain...Your servant and friend,

Pastor Rick Scarborough
