WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- If John McCain wants to pick one of his rivals from the presidential primaries as his running mate, he might be better off looking at former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee instead of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Romney is at or near the top of most of the veepstakes betting, though it's hard to understand why. He proved himself inept at winning votes in the primaries despite spending millions of dollars of his own money, while Huckabee, with virtually no money, ended up with more delegates than Romney.
Romney's flip-flops on social issues have made Republican conservatives justifiably skeptical, while his Mormon faith remains an obstacle, particularly among evangelical Christians. Evangelical groups have been busy the last couple of weeks lobbying against the choice of Romney for VP.
