The Capps Amendment and More: Mandated Abortion Coverage

Rep. Louis Capps (D-CA) introduced an amendment to the House version of the healthcare bill that provides for the coverage of abortion and mandates that an abortion plan be made available in every region of the United States. The Capps Amendment was presented in committee this weekend and it passed with a vote of 30-28.
The House will be out on break during the next three weeks. During this time Town Hall Meetings will be held in Congressional districts across the United States. It is essential that we find the time to be in attendance and express our opposition to this amendment directly to our Representatives. Ask them specifically if they are against any healthcare reform bill that will use your tax dollars to pay for abortions.

Obama's nationalized healthcare plan raises numerous concerns in addition to the abortion mandate. Family Research Council has outlined the following, including samples of excellent questions for your Congressional representatives which can be posed at the Town Hall Meetings:
- Euthanasia - The plan requires seniors to submit to "end of life" of counseling every 5 years as they age. This will provide them with an "opportunity to discuss alternatives for care at the end of their lives." What's next? Diminishing the fact that they're still alive altogether?
Question: Will you oppose any healthcare reform bill that in any way promotes euthanasia? - Rationing of Care - Obama's advisors have suggested "rationing care" to certain individuals. Who decides who is worthy of what care? In addition, the House bill will reportedly be paid for with $500 billion in Medicare and Medicaid cuts. Seniors would be most affected at a time in their lives when they need the most quality care.
Question: How can government promise to do more with less? Will you oppose any healthcare reform bill that in any way limits by access to healthcare or medicines recommended by my doctor? - Increased Burden on Small Businesses - The bill imposes a new 8% payroll tax on businesses that do not provide health coverage but have payrolls of $400,000 or more. This is in addition to the current payroll tax of 15%. So in spite of the rising 9.5% unemployment rate (which the Obama administration has sworn is coming down), small business owners will be asked to pay a tax rate of almost 25% if they don't provide health coverage. It's a fact that small businesses provide the most American jobs yet they will be the most penalized.
Question: Why are you imposing additional mandates and taxes on small businesses, which create the overwhelming majority of new jobs, in the middle of a severe recession? - Cost - The estimated debt that will be incurred by this healthcare plan at the end of five years is $11 trillion. At the end of 10 years the debt is estimated at $17 trillion. Common sense says we can't afford it!
Question: Why are Congress and the President pushing through a healthcare bill that would cost another trillion dollars over the next ten years? Shouldn't we concentrate on getting the debt under control first? - Quality of Care - Most Americans polled are satisfied with the quality of healthcare in the U.S. while 70% of people in countries with socialized medicine say that their systems need "fundamental change" or "complete rebuilding."
Question: Why are you trying to force us in the direction of more government involvement in healthcare when everywhere government-run healthcare has been tried, quality declines and care is rationed? - People are Being Ignored - A recent Rasmussen report revealed that 53% of voters believe that healthcare reform will be more expensive, 50% believe there will be a decline in the quality of coverage and 78% will result in middle class tax hikes. ANOTHER REASON TO MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD AT A TOWN HALL MEETING!!
Question: Why are you and the White House rushing this bill through Congress and ignoring the concerns of the American people? - Loss of Freedom - After a five year grace period, every new insurance policy will be required to comply with all government mandates while any new policy changes will invalidate previous coverage. This will ultimately force you to choose the government plan!
Question: Why do you believe bureaucrats can make better decisions than me about what kind of healthcare I should have? And will you guarantee that any healthcare reform bill passed by Congress will always allow me to choose my own doctor? - Race - Page 909 of the House bill promotes affirmative action as it awards grants to medical schools and "to entities that have a demonstrated record of the following ... training individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds."
Question: Why are you throwing affirmative action/racial set asides into a healthcare reform bill? - Pre-existing Conditions - Obama has promised that no insurance company will be allowed to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions. Realistically this will drive up the cost of coverage for every person.
Question: Isn't it clear that this provision would drive up the cost of health insurance for everyone?
Socialized medicine has never worked and will not work in America. We have a responsibility to speak out against it and make sure our elected officials are accurately representing us as their constituents. We can't allow our country to be completely changed and sit back and do nothing. Our freedom and the freedom of future generations depend on it.
