Pro-Life Bill Being Voted on in TX Senate This Week
Senator Dan Patrick’s ultrasound bill, S.B. 182, has been put on the Senate Intent Calendar for a vote as early as Wednesday or Thursday of this week. This is a pro-life bill that would require an ultrasound to be performed on a woman considering an abortion as well as an opportunity to hear the fetal heartbeat. The doctor would also be required to explain the ultrasound to the woman, showing her the size of the baby as well as the outline of any internal organs that are forming.
The pregnant woman will not be required to view the ultrasound or hear the heartbeat but in other states where similar bills have been passed, many thousands of lives have been saved.
Republican San Antonio Rep. Frank Corte, Jr. presented an identical bill, H.B. 36, to the Texas House of Representatives.
Joe Pojman of the Texas Alliance for Life says, “We have women who come to us saying, ‘If I had known this was a baby with fingers and toes…’ They wished they would have known that before the abortion.”
The scripture comes to mind, “Without a vision, the people cast off restraint…” (Prov. 29:18) What greater vision can a mother have of her unborn child than to see it forming, hear its heart beating? Without the reality of the choice she’s making before her, justification becomes easy. It’s a lot easier to believe the lies that the baby isn’t really a life, much less her child. This legislation needs our support!
Governor Rick Perry encouraged the Texas Legislature to pass both pro-life bills, S.B. 182 and H.B. 36, when he gave his State of the State Address in January, “As we consider the growing threats to our nation's unborn, I believe it's time to add another layer of protection for the most vulnerable Texans. I hope you will join me in supporting Senator Patrick and Representative Corte's effort to require those wanting to terminate a pregnancy to review their ultrasound before proceeding. Issues of this complexity and moral weight are the sort of thing that we are sent here to address…”
