Vote Your Faith Not Your Fears

The moment has arrived, as it does every election season, when a rising clamor of voices mounts to summon the evangelical voters of America to play their traditional role and bow down before the idols of expedience and realism. Once again the all-knowing experts advise us that if we wish to have any influence whatsoever of the outcome of the election we must temper our core convictions with practicality and give our support to candidates who are “electable.” In this instance, “electable” means candidates who are capable of maintaining the delicate balance of mouthing placating platitudes on the dreaded social issues of life and family with sufficient fervor to win Republican primaries while discreetly signaling to the establishment that they will immediately shift center once nominated and/or elected, doing nothing whatsoever to alter the deadly status quo on abortion and the protection of marriage. The rallying cry of these self-anointed experts is “we’ve got to beat Obama!” Once again, the all-knowing experts have it exactly wrong. If evangelical voters repeat the mistake of heeding their advice the slaughter of the unborn and the collapse of the family will continue at the same devastating pace which has brought our country to the brink of destruction.

I would plead with my fellow evangelicals to spurn the false counsel of the experts. Instead, let us honor our God and change history, by voting on the basis of our faith rather than our fears. Let us trust in the promises of God’s Word and do what is right rather than what is practical, leaving the outcome to Him. Let us vote for life and family without compromise or hesitation, supporting only those candidates who are steadfast in their support of life and family and who will have the courage to put those convictions into practice in office. Please, don’t vote on the basis of poll numbers. Don’t vote on the basis of electability. Vote to rescue the unborn. Vote to restore marriage. Vote your Christian conscience as a faithful servant of Jesus Christ and leave the rest to God.

If that means the re-election of President Obama, then so be it. The election of another do-nothing Republican to replace him would make no difference whatsoever in the cause of life and family. We are confronted today with a choice between life and death, right and wrong. In such a choice the lesser of two evils is still evil. Let us summon up our spiritual courage. Let us finally recognize the nature of the spiritual warfare in which we are engaged. Then let us boldly go forth and take up the sling of little David, to slay the mighty giant of worldly power to the glory of God.
