VISION AMERICA DEEPLY DISTURBED BY SENATOR HUTCHINSON’S VOTE ON JUDICIAL NOMINEE

Vision America President Dr. Rick Scarborough said the organization is “deeply disturbed” Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison’s (R-Texas) vote against Bush judicial nominee J. Leon Holmes.

Earlier this week, Holmes was narrowly confirmed as a federal district court judge for the Eastern District of Arkansas. (The nomination was confirmed 51-46.) Hutchison was one of only five Republicans who joined Democrats like Hillary Clinton and Dianne Feinstein in voting against Holmes.

Besides his pro-life positions, Senate liberals were outraged by an article that Holmes and his wife co-authored for a Catholic publication citing the admonition in Ephesians, 5:21-23 for wives to “be subject to your husbands.” The newly confirmed judge is a practicing Catholic.

In justifying her vote against Holmes, Hutchison complained, “He doesn’t have the fundamental commitment to the total equality of women in our society.”

Scarborough criticized Hutchison’s opposition to the pro-life judge. “Have we reached the point where Bible-believing Christians are now automatically disqualified from serving on the federal bench?” Scarborough asked. “If that’s the standard, then the Christians who wrote our Constitution couldn’t be confirmed as federal judges today.”

In Ephesians, St. Paul also counsels, “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her.” Scarborough asked, “Do feminists find that advice objectionable, as well?”

Scarborough cautioned, “I’m sure most of the voters who re-elected Hutchison to the Senate in 2000 believe in The New Testament, including Ephesians 5:21-23. Is the Senator saying that this means they are opposed to equal rights for women? Is it the Senator’s position that her supporters aren’t qualified for the federal judiciary because they believe in Biblical truth?”

“Senator Hutchison might wish to rethink her knee-jerk feminism prior to the next election in two years,” Scarborough said.

Headquartered in Lufkin, Texas, Vision America opposes the tyranny of activist judges, supports the Federal Marriage Amendment and believes the president’s judicial nominees should be evaluated on their merits, instead of being subjected to a politically correct litmus test.
